In-Home Care Can Reduce Emotional Toll of Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment takes a significant physical toll on many patients, but sometimes the emotional side effects can be almost as substantial. Depression, anxiety and adjusting to the medical procedures can certainly be a challenge, but home care providers may be able to make the recovery process go a bit more smoothly.

Depression affects between 15 and 25 percent of cancer patients and can be due to a number of reasons. Fear of dying, changes in physical appearance and disruption of life plans are all common causes, according to the National Cancer Institute, but in-home care providers can help lessen the anxiety and stress it may be exacerbating depressive symptoms.

For starters, in-home care providers can make recovery go smoother by taking care of things like scheduling and transportation to remove any stress caused by getting to appointments on time. They can also help around the home with tasks like meal preparation.

In-home care is also vital for cancer patients because they can notice changes in condition that could signal health issues and alert their doctors. Not only that, but it's hard to discount the important role companionship can play in reducing the mental stress of cancer treatment.

"Please offer more training clsseas with different topics such as caring for clients with hypertension, stroke, diabetes etc. I really like the clsseas and find that these clsseas help me to take care of my client better. Also. Please offer more hours to help provide care for consumers. Providing more hours will help PA's provide the adequate care that consumers need. 3-4hrs a day is not enough time to care for consumers. Less time to care for my consumer. Being a PA is a real job and it deserves to be treated as such. Please continue the home services program."
