Three signs your loved one may need help with daily life

As family members age, it's important to check up on them periodically to see how they're doing. During these visits, you should look for signs to see if they are having difficulty accomplishing daily tasks. If you see any of the three following signs, it may mean your loved one could use some extra help around the house, and may benefit from the services of an in-home care agency.

A hug can tell you a lot

Not only will your family member love getting a big hug from you, it gives you a chance to discreetly see how well they’re taking care of themselves. As you hug them, take the opportunity to smell their breath and clothes. If either smells bad, they may not be brushing their teeth, bathing or changing their clothes regularly, and may need help or reminders to accomplish these routine tasks.

Request tea or coffee

While visiting your family member’s home, ask them for a cup of tea or coffee. It will be tempting to help them prepare the beverage, but do resist, as letting them do the work will show you how well they get around the house. As they get your drink ready, watch to see if they:

  • Know where everything is located
  • Are strong enough to pick up the kettle
  • Remember to turn off the stove or kettle

If they're having trouble with this simple task, then they're also likely having difficulty preparing meals and may benefit from having someone come by to assist or cook for them on a regular basis.

Ask whether they have plans

Before you leave, ask if they have any plans for the upcoming week. It's normal for loved ones to start slowing down in their senior years, but if they don't have any plans to leave the house and you find them making several excuses not to leave the house, then they may be having trouble getting out the door or driving.

Introduce the subject of home care
If you notice any signs that your loved one may need assistance, carefully introduce the subject of home care during your visit. Quality in-home care lets your loved one stay in their home while still maintaining their well-being and overall quality of life. In-home caregivers can help with personal hygiene, grocery shopping and meal preparation, going to appointments and so much more without compromising the freedom they’ve enjoyed throughout their lifetime.

If your family member needs help, SYNERGY HomeCare’s compassionate, highly qualified in-home caregivers  can provide the assistance they need to live a great life while remaining safe and happy in the comfort of their own home. We offer complimentary, no-obligation in-home needs assessments to introduce ourselves and get to know you and your loved one. During this assessment, our home care experts will be happy to discuss options with you and your loved one about the scope of care which would be most effective for them, and also explain how a bit of extra assistance can actually help them remain independent and at home.

To learn more about professional home care and to find out if it’s the right option for you and your family member, contact your local SYNERGY HomeCare office in Schaumburg to get started today.
