We all know that maintaining the right level of physical activity is important for a healthy lifestyle. Walking is often touted as one of the best forms of exercise. It can be done at any age, completed at a comfortable pace and does not require a large investment. Comfortable shoes are the only real requirement.
Web MD offers the following tips for those new to fitness walking:
- Start with a short-term goal. For example, walk for 5 or 10 minutes every day. Or increase your number of steps by 300 or 500 each day.
- After you've made walking a habit, set a longer-term goal. You may want to set a goal of walking briskly for at least 30 minutes a day or work up to 10,000 steps a day. You can try to do this 5 days a week or more.
- You can wear a pedometer to track your steps each day.
- To stay motivated, find a walking partner, such as a family member, friend or coworker. Daily dog walks are also a great way to keep up your walking routine.
It has been a long winter and we have seen more snow cover than typical winters. In an effort to get everyone out of the house, you may want to consider mall walking.
Walking at Twelve Oaks Mall. Twelve Oaks Mall, located at the intersection of I-96 and Novi Road, is one of the largest malls in the area. Mall hours are 10am to 9pm, except on Sunday, when the mall opens at 11am and closes at 6pm. The information desk has information on the approximate distance of one loop around the mall. They can be reached at (248) 348-9400.
Outdoor Options. Don't forget that walking the downtown areas of Northville and Farmington can be fun as well, especially on a bright and sunny day (Spring is, after all, just around the corner).
