Benefits of Pet Ownership

Photo (5)

A great deal of research (WebMD.com) has been done over recent years on the many benefits of ownership for seniors.  Findings show that pet ownership has a positive health benefits.  Idenitified benefits include:

  • lowering patient blood pressure
  • lowering triglyceride levels
  • keeping patients active
  • increasing serotonin and dopamine levels

Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says, "Caregivers also feel less burdened when there is a pet, particularly if it is a cat, which generally requires less care than a dog."

Free Cats for Seniors.  Oakland County's C.A.T.S. (Companion Animals Touching Seniors) offers seniors the opportunity to foster a cat.  This two-month program provides foster "parents" with all of the supplies to care for their pet.  At the end of the foster period, the senior is given the option to adopt the cat.  The only fee is a $7.50 license fee.  Interested parties should contact the Oakland Pet Adoption Center.

Petfinder.  A national site, Petfinder ..., offers information on pet adoption and is easy to use.  Enter your zip code under "Location" on the home page and a list of pets available for adoption closest to you appears.  For information on places to adopt pets, see "Shelters & Rescues" and use your zip code again.  A comprehensive list of animal welfare ahencies is displayed.  The same site includes an thoughtful article about seniors and pets, and touches on some of the issues seniors encounter when owning a pet.  The author offers some solutions that were implemented in her area.  Hopefully, others have found this article of interest and are using some of the best ideas.  Follow the link, ... to this worthwhile article.

The Petfinder site is fairly large and offers a lot of information.  Local options are available and some are affiliated with the Michigan Humane Society.  See below for more information.
