Elderly Care Hits Home for Katie Couric, Raising Important Questions about Living Independently with Help

Most of us know Katie Couric as an unflappable journalist with years of experience delivering hard-hitting news and sharing other people’s very personal stories. So it came as a bit of a surprise to me when I saw this editorial Katie wrote for Woman’s Day about her family’s struggle in caring for her 89-year-old widowed mother.

Katie is part of the growing “sandwich generation,” a group of people who must balance caring for their children as well as their parents. Like millions of Americans, Katie must also grapple with the challenge of living far away from her mother. She writes about her mother’s use of a medical alarm but not knowing if she really uses it as she should. And she writes about her mother’s deep-seated pride in her independence; her wish to remain active and in control of her life at home.

So what is a son or daughter to do? How can one gain assurance that an aging parent is healthy and safe but also enjoying the dignity of living as one chooses?

Clients often pose this same challenging scenario to me. They know their loved one needs assistance but the person in question wants desperately to remain at home and “live life on his or her own terms.”

The chief reason I got into this business was to help people in need and assist them in accomplishing the things that would make their lives more satisfying. I also want to provide families peace of mind that their loved one is as healthy, happy and safe as can be. Our caregivers share the same goals and work diligently to empower their clients as much as possible while addressing their essential needs.

Katie ends her piece by noting there are no easy answers to dilemmas like hers. And she’s right. This could be one of the biggest challenges she ever faces. When the time comes to make a decision, it’s nice to know that SYNERGY HomeCare is here to ease everyone’s burden.

Family caregivers are pillars of the community, and true heroes. These are people who give up their time, money and often large parts of their life to care for loved ones that need assistance due to age or illness. According to a study by the National Alliance for Caregiving, a quarter of the country's adult population works hard at helping loved ones deal with the effects of aging.
