According to SYNERGY HomeCare research, falls are the No. 1 cause of injuries, hospital visits and deaths among those 65 and older. In fact, an older adult is treated in an emergency room for a fall every 15 seconds and every 29 minutes, an older adult dies as a result of or complications from a fall.
SYNERGY Northeast Metro President and Owner Brian McDonald is working hard to curb the danger that falls pose to the growing elderly population in the Twin Cities. He’s partnered with the Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View (SBM) Fire Department to provide residents across the Northeast metro with actionable tips for staying safe in their homes. You can review some of their tips in the presentation, “Remembering When – A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults.”
One out of three seniors falls each year, but Brian’s goal in teaching these classes is to ensure the participants aren’t among those who fall. “The statistics for falls are awful," says McDonald. “So I am passionate about teaching these communities and the seniors who live there to be the two out of three who avoid and prevent falls.” Brian has presented on this topic to more that 250 seniors in 2014. More talks are scheduled for 2015.
