Senior Care in Huntley MT
When you do finally decide that it's time for you to have respite time, do you talk yourself out of it? Or worse, do you spend the time that you're gone worrying and fretting about your loved one? If either of these situations describe you, these tips may help.
Realize that You've Earned a Break
Sometimes family caregivers can realize on one level that they've earned this break and yet a tiny little part of them doesn't feel that it's been earned. If this is true for you, try to treat yourself as you would your best friend. Would you tell your friend that she should be sticking to her caregiving duties, no matter what, or would you tell her that she needs her down time? Act as though you were your friend and give yourself the time.
Part of having a restful time away from caregiving involves having a plan for the entire experience. Once you know that you're going to take time away, start making your plan. Line up other family members and senior care providers who can take over for you and make any arrangements that you need to in order to ensure that life goes smoothly while you're gone. This can mean setting everything up for your loved one and for your respite care team so that they simply have to follow your plan.
Before you leave, make sure that no one is going to have to struggle to figure out anything. This can mean stocking up on items at the grocery store, too. You'll also feel more at ease if you know that everyone has exactly what they need, even if you're only gone for a few days.
Check in, But Not Too Much
If you've never left for any period of time before, you're going to feel understandably nervous. Checking in can help you to allay any nerves or feelings of unease. Be careful, though, because checking in too often can make your respite team feel that you don't trust them and it can drive you a little batty as well. Try checking in just once a day unless you'll only be gone for a weekend. In that case, try to check in only once during the weekend. Once you have a plan and you actually follow it, unwinding from caregiving is easier than you think.
