How Physical Activity Helps Older Adults

Although everyone benefits from regular physical activity, adults over 65 who maintain an active lifestyle benefit most from regular exercise. Maintaining an active lifestyle that involves plenty of moderate to vigorous physical activity can help prevent a wide variety of age-related health problems. Health issues such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure often cause more harm in older adults who maintain a sedentary lifestyle as opposed to more active adults.

As we get older it may become more difficult to maintain an active lifestyle and this can be a result of a number of factors. However by remaining as active as possible throughout elderly life an individual can receive a number of benefits as a result. In a recent British Medical Jouranl (BMJ) article it is stated that physical activity has well documented health benefits. Studies have shown that people who exercise enjoy a higher quality of life and improved health status compared with those with sedentary behaviors with subsequent reductions in their risk of admission to the hospital.

There are a number of ways in which an elderly individual can stay active and these can include walking, gardening, swimming, occupational tasks and housekeeping can keep older adults mobile and active. By aiming to complete 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week, an elderly  individual will be able to remain independent for much longer compared to those who are not as active. Prior to starting an excercise regime check with your health care provider. 

Through implementing a Home Care package, an elderly individual can be supported in a number of different ways in order to maintain an active lifestyle. A care giver can help an individual to stay active by encouraging them to go for walks, with the confidence that they are being supported and are safe. Another way in which a caregiver can help an individual is by encouraging them to go on outings to assist an individual to partake in the activities that they enjoy doing, which in turn can increase self esteem and confidence.
