How to Choose a Qualified Caregiver

Synergy HomeCare Agency's Professionals vs. Private Arrangements?

In part 1 of this blog entry, we addressed how to figure out when is the best time to secure in-home care services for yourself or a loved one. In this entry (part 2) we'll address selecting the right CHHA, CNA, or caregiver for the job.

Okay, so if you've reached the crossroad where you know that the decision to secure in-home care is the right one, but there still remains the Catch-22 of securing a trustworthy and capable individual to provide that home care. As previously stated, in the state of New Jersey alone there are 800+ non-medical home care agencies. There are also a great number of individuals who are employed through illegal, "private" arrangements to provide in-home care services to patients. Hiring someone by means of one of these types of arrangements is imprudent for several reasons. Not only does it open the family up to a number of workman's compensation and both state and federal tax consequences; but it does not assure the family of the due diligence of a thorough background check and confirmation of credentialing and certification. It also does not provide for a back-up plan in the event that the private home care worker becomes ill, needs respite, takes vacation, or simply decides to quit the in-home care case.

The best option is to seek out the services of a reputable home care agency that is a direct employer of certified home health aides and experienced caregivers. Avoid staffing companies that pose as home care agencies (there are many out there) as they will not provide the proper protection in terms of licensing, bonding, professional liability insurance, caregiver training, and oversight that you desire. While there are many home care agencies in NJ and nationwide, it does not mean that they have all been created equally. It is essential when choosing a home care agency to provide in-home care services, that you pick an agency that offers the proper credentialing, licensing, training, and insurances that provide for the 24/7 piece of mind your family desires and deserves. The best option is to contact a NJ state licensed home care agency that provides thorough criminal background checks and screening of their home health aides, that carries the proper professional liability insurance, and that takes a personal and professional interest in each individual case while recognizing the explicit needs of your family.
