Whether it is in the morning, mid afternoon, after dinner, or all throughout the day, drinking coffee is just a natural part of many seniors’ day. In addition, going out for a cup of coffee is a common social activity that is a great one for seniors to connect with friends and family. Despite it beings so commonplace, there are a lot of myths and rumors about coffee and its health effects - both positive and negative. So, what is the truth about coffee? Is it good for seniors to drink it on a regular basis, or bad? Read on to learn some of the health pros and cons of coffee for seniors.

Coffee Pros:

Some research has shown that regular coffee drinking can lower the risk of certain medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, some cancers, depression, and even premature death. The reason why coffee may be able to prevent these medical conditions is because it contains antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, and it may even have the effect of an antidepressant.

The caffeine in coffee may also have some benefits. It can boost memory and concentration and lower fatigue. For senior who need some extra motivation to get to the gym, a cup of coffee in the morning can give you an energy boost. In addition, it may even help you to have a better workout as it helps the body burn fat and it increases the adrenaline in the blood.

Coffee Cons:

Many of the health benefits of coffee are seen when people drink about 1-4 cups a day. However, when seniors drink more than 4 cups a day, they may see some negative health effects. The caffeine in 4+ cups of coffee a day may be too much for seniors. Instead of giving you a healthy energy boost, too much caffeine can cause jitteriness, restlessness, nervousness, and even insomnia. When seniors drink coffee late in the evening, they may also may find that they have trouble sleeping. To remedy this problem, seniors can simply limit all of their coffee consumption to the morning or midday.

The caffeine in coffee can also raise blood pressure, so those with high blood pressure already should take caution in drinking coffee.

Seniors who are unsure if their coffee habit is good for their health or bad for their health should consult with their doctor. Everyone’s individual health needs are unique, even when it comes to coffee!
