What You Need To Know About Managing Mom's Medications

What happens if Mom forgets her medication? Let’s face it, it can happen to any of us. We get busy and then cannot remember whether or not we took our medication. For younger people who may just be taking vitamins and other supplements it may not be a big deal. However, if you are like most aging adults you may be taking a number of different medications.

Taking Medications At The Right Time

Medications are prescribed to be taken at certain times. Some may need to be taken with food while others do not need food. Forgetting to take a medication every now and then may not seem like something to worry about but it could cause dire consequences. For someone who is taking multiple medications it could be just as troublesome is doubling up on the pills. Can’t remember if you took your pill? Don’t take another. That can really cause problems.

Solutions That Can Help

An Electronic Pill Minder is an easy solution. Pills are placed in the containers by day and time of day to be taken. They can be set up for a week, two weeks or even for a month with some models. Once set, the system is closed and locked for safety. It is programed to emit a sound and open a window when it is time to take the medication. Only the pills that are supposed to be taken will be available. All others will remain safely locked away in the container.

Sometimes you need more.

Kathryn found her mother-in -law Pat didn’t like to take her medications. She was on a blood thinner and high blood pressure medication as well as others for her arthritis. It would not be good to take too much or too little of these medications.

But what was happening worried Kathryn and her husband. When the machine sounded the alarm, Pat would take out the pills and simply lay them on the counter. When the family came for a visit they would find lots of pills on the counter. This was a huge concern.

A home care agency was hired to help remind Pat to take the medications. Encouraging Pat with a glass of juice and a cookie was all she needed. The one two punch worked. Kathryn set up the pills each week and the agency caregiver reminded Pat to take them. No more worries of missed pills or doubling up.

Getting medications from the same pharmacist

When someone is taking more than 3 medications it is really important to use the same pharmacy. Bouncing from pharmacy to pharmacy to save a couple of bucks is not a wise thing to do. A pharmacist who knows you can help to be an advocate in your care.

Shop Local

The folks at Gloyers Pharmacy in Tomball, Texas have been around a long time.  They are a local pharmacy that has been serving the Tomball community since 1960.

Not wanting to rush their customers, the  pharmacists at Gloyers in Tomball, Texas, take the time to talk to people about their medications. They can help to advise someone if their medication may have certain side effects.

Likewise, they can also alert someone if the medication may not work well with other medications or supplements they may also be taking. When one pharmacist works with someone they are able to see a full view of what may be going on. The pharmacists at Gloyers develop a relationship with many of their regular customers. So whether you live in Tomball, Texas or somplace else, find a good local pharmacist to partner in your healthcare.

In Conclusion

Medications can be confusing for seniors, especially when they have many different ones to take.  Going with an aging parent to the doctor and the pharmacy is a good practice. Sometimes however, it just isn’t possible. A Home care companion or caregiver can take an aging parent for their visits when you are not able to. Furthermore, the caregiver can let you know what was said by both the doctor and the pharmacist. This will help keep you in the loop regarding the care of your mom or dad.
